If you've ever wanted to work in a professional sporting environment, helping to inspire others and provide opportunities for them to get involved in sport, then an Apprenticeship with Middlesex Cricket could be just what you’re looking for.
The Middlesex Apprenticeship Academy offers a one-year placement on a Level 2 Community Activator or Business Administration Diploma, within the Middlesex Participation Team.
The training, delivered by Mitre training gives individuals the perfect opportunity to be involved in exciting activities throughout Middlesex, gain insight and experience into coaching and sports development.
Here are the stories of two Apprentices who joined our scheme and continue to work with Middlesex Cricket in full-time positions within our Participation Team.
Alex Hughes, aged 26
Alex was part of the first Apprentice cohort in 2014. He says that having had a passion for cricket since he was six, seeing the Apprenticeship position advertised online was ideal.
He was able to combine his work life with something that he really enjoyed in his personal life, which enables him to go from day-to-day work with so much enthusiasm and passion.
In his first year, Alex completed the Level 2 Apprenticeship course and became a full-time coach with Middlesex. Since then, he is working towards his Level 3 Team Leader and Supervisor accreditation and transitioned into a Participation Officer, organising school delivery, schools’ competitions, and coaching the Middlesex Disability Squads. In 2021 Alex is the Lead Coach for Middlesex Disability’s D40 Second Eleven squad.
Alex said: “Starting as an apprentice and then working towards becoming a Participation Officer has been amazing and I have enjoyed every minute. I’m looking forward to many years to come with Middlesex Cricket. For any cricket mad fan this is an amazing opportunity to use cricket to change lives, which is not to be missed.”
Katie Reeves, aged 20
One of Middlesex’s more recent Apprenticeship additions, Katie started her apprenticeship in September 2019, having seen the scheme advertised and wanting to take the opportunity to start her career in sport.
She qualified as a professional coach during the summer of 2020, despite the challenges that were presented through the Covid lockdowns and the limited possibilities that the pandemic provided to deliver cricket.
“I wasn’t that confident growing up, but this has made me feel more confident and made me feel quite good about myself – being a girl in cricket. I enjoy going into the schools and telling the girls my story of how I got into cricket, how much fun it is and how many new people that I met through playing.”

This Apprenticeship is offered in partnership with Mitre Group – Leader in Training and will provide the successful candidates with the following qualifications:
