June is the ECB’s Women’s Big Cricket Month, to help encourage as many people as possible to get involved with the game. We spoke to Shepherds Bush CC, who have just set up a new Women and Girls section.
The club has a very welcoming social scene and are particularly excited to be hosting a number of events in 2021. They are hosting a Women’s Open Day on the 4th of July, and their Annual Summer Party on July 17th. Later in the summer is an end of season six-a-side tournament, played in fancy dress!
Why is there the need for Women and Girls’ cricket at Shepherds Bush CC?
Shepherds Bush Cricket Club have over thirty girls regularly training, with a girls team that has been entered into a league for the first time this season. The club has recently launched a women’s section, as this is critical to its success as a thriving and inclusive community club. Therefore, it is also very important that the girls, who join the club as juniors, have a clear path for progression into open age cricket. Their Women’s Open Day will be an excellent opportunity for all abilities to have a go at playing cricket in a relaxed environment.
What else happens at Shepherds Bush CC?
Established in 1882, the club was a founding member of the Middlesex County Cricket League in 1972. Alongside the new Women’s section, Shepherds Bush host a thriving junior section with over 200 children aged between 6 and 15, and six Senior Men’s teams competing in Saturday and Sunday leagues. The volunteer cricket coaches play a key role in local children’s development through sport, with players coming from a diverse range of backgrounds and ethnicities.
