After arriving at Lord's in his teens from Norfolk on a trial for Middlesex, Clive went on to enjoy a 23-year career with the club as a player, and has retained a close association in retirement, too.
His first-class career span from 1964 to 1987 coincided with a highly successful era for the club. He played in the County Championship wins of 1976, 1980, 1982 and 1985, as well as the shared title season of 1977, scoring over 24,000 first-class runs in the process. Clive was also part of the Middlesex side which won three NatWest/Gillette Trophy finals, and two Benson and Hedges trophies between 1977 and 1984.
One of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1979, Clive remained at Lord's after retiring from playing - albeit at the Nursery End instead, as head coach of MCC. He served that role until 2009, and was subsequently Middlesex president from 2013 to 2015.
