Edward hails from Rochdale in Lancashire and attended Bury Grammar School before reading Government at the University of Essex. On graduating, they served on the national executive of the National Union of Students, including acting as NUS sports officer, re-launching the ‘Keep Wednesday Afternoon Free For Sport’ campaign. Edward went on to work in the university sector, rising to be development director at Liverpool John Moores University and City University, London, prior to setting up a successful consultancy practice specialising in governance and risk, stakeholder engagement, and philanthropy.
Edward was elected as a councillor on the City of London Corporation in 2001, and currently chairs the senior Establishment Committee and is deputy chair of the Capital Buildings Committee. They were previously chair of the Corporation’s Licensing and Standards Committees, and deputy chair of the 2012 Sub-Committee, leading liaison with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Following the Games, Edward was appointed as chair of the Amateur Swimming association (now Swim England) responsible for leading a major programme of change in the Association’s governance and leadership. Edward also served on the Football Association’s Inclusion Advisory Board and is now an Independent Director of the British Basketball League.
Edward is a magistrate in central London; a trustee of Trust for London, City Bridge Trust, the Bishopsgate Foundation, and the Mark Benevolent Fund; governor of the City of London School; and a Role Model for LGBT equality charity, Stonewall. A lover of cricket since school days, where Edward was first eleven scorer and (non-playing) house cricket captain, they first joined Middlesex in 1997, and have been an associate member of MCC since 2013.
